The premise behind “Off the Plate” is in keeping with the mission of the organization which is to highlight pure plate produced images. All work in the exhibit is directly from the plate meaning the artist has not incorporated hand coloring or post production after the image has been pulled- so what you’re seeing is the unadulterated form of the print that takes the printmaker much time to develop: considering the proper ink mixing and application, the amount of plate wiping and of course implementing just the right amount of pressure whether using a hand transfer technique or the etching press.
Off the Plate is an open theme allowing for great diversity in composition and subject matter.
You will find anything from a can of sardines to the interior of an opera house; we have collaged still life and explorations of more spiritual and psychological landscapes.
We also have wonderful sculptural and three dimensional printmaking on display.
We kept the exhibit scale select and smaller so visitors would have an opportunity to really focus on the individual printmaker, appreciate the technique, and have the time to take in an entire exhibit without getting overwhelmed by an over-saturation of media.
Printmaking is truly a unique art discipline requiring a developed technical and creative ability and this exhibit does not disappoint. Join us Sat, Jan 18th at 2pm for the opening reception, free and open to the public.
