Advanced Technique in
Gelatin Plate Monotype
Instructor: Cara Gonier
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
In this class, Cara will help demystify printing on a gelatin plate
to achieve a true collectible fine art print.
What is a Monotype anyway?
A monotype is essentially ONE of a kind: mono is a Latin word which means ONE and type means kind.
Therefore, a monotype is one printed image which does not have any form of matrix.
This is different from a monoprint that has some form of basic matrix that is repeatable.
Monotypes are truely one of a kind, unique pieces of artwork.
•This workshop covers advanced techniques of paint chemistry, why and how to layer specific colors to achieve painterly and atmospheric effects. You will learn aspects of color theory and mixing useful in creating prints or paintings.
•Understanding the importance of paper selection as well as care and maintenance of a gel plate will be discussed in an easy to understand format suitable for the beginner or professional artist.
•The development of a fine art monotype takes some patience.
It is, however, guaranteed to be a very satisfying and rewarding process!
•We will be working strictly with acrylic paint (to reduce emission of VOC’s and encourage an allergy reduced environment.
NO solvents, oil based paints, rubbing alcohol or other materials that give off strong VOC’s will be used during this class)
It is worth noting that many manufactured gelatin plates are comprised of mineral oil that may have a faint scent bothersome to a minority. It is recommended to unpack your gelatin plate and let it “breathe” before use.
All are welcome-
No prior experience in gelatin plate printing necessary.
Materials list will be emailed to registered students.

OGUNQUIT MUSEUM of AMERICAN ART
ABOUT OMAA
The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) was founded by Lost Generation artist Henry Strater and opened in 1953. Closely connected to two of America’s earliest art communities that directly contributed to the roots of American modernism, the OMAA today houses a permanent collection of important paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, and photographs from the late 1800s to the present. A short walk from Perkins Cove, the museum and its three acres of sculpture gardens overlook Narrow Cove and the Atlantic Ocean.
